Draft Logo

Sticking with my theme, my logo revolves around the world of baseball, in particular college baseball. I tried to keep the logo as simple as possible while still getting across what makes Cougar baseball different than other places.

I drew inspiration on the words at the bottom from our tutorial on the fist logo, using the rounded corner rectangle with words placed on it. I used my favorite font, Univers, for the “Cougar Baseball” portion. Univers is a strong font and the official font of the WSU Athletic Department, so I felt it fit well in my logo.

The silhouette is of a WSU baseball player, although I’ll keep the player nameless, see if anyone can guess. I blacked out the image, making it a silhouette, because I feel it makes the logo have more potential to be timeless, since no player can be easily identified the viewer can place any player they wish in that place, no matter what era it is.

Obviously the figure in my logo is baseball, words at the bottom and Bryan Tower piece at the top. I though about adding something in the background but I thought it might make the logo too busy, so I left the rest white, making a lot of ground.

I tried to balance the logo by placing the Bryan Tower portion near center, however I’m not sure I’m happy with the placement so it will probably move to off-center either left or right in the final design.

The Bryan Tower and Palouse hills portion were added to the top of the baseball because I thought it gave it a more “Pullman” or “college” feel, which was one goal of the logo. This isn’t professional baseball, college baseball is something different and I thought something to represent this town/college would be a nice addition to the logo. I feel like this potion could use the most work though and will most likely be much different in my final design.

Anyways, hope everyone likes this draft of my logo, let me know what you think!

  1. Brett, I think you have a solid design idea for the cougar baseball team here. The only minor fixes that I feel could take it to the next level is to fix the brown line at the top to create a solid arc. Also I would possibly rescale the bell tower and place a WSU cougar flag at the top of the tower. Also it would most likely be possible to use the same silhouette effect that you used on the player and apply it to the baseball so that the laces on the ball are also included.

  2. Brett,
I like how you incorporated the clock tower, a symbol of Washington State University (WSU), to represent WSU in your logo. Although, it is drastically different than the rest of the logo, if that was your intention I think it could stick out and still look polished. I think this can be done using some of the style tools in Illustrator. Plus, I think you’re missing the top of the clock tower too.
The baseball player is my favorite part. I enjoy how the silhouette is completely black, which to me means this could be any baseball player. I might consider raising the silhouette a bit so the feet are showing, and maybe make a cloud of dust coming up behind the feet? I think that would add motion to an otherwise still image.
The rounded corners are a nice touch for the text. For a logo, I feel the text might be overbearing, it seems to be the focus of the logo.
I hope this information was helpful and you have fun reworking your design!

  3. Brett, I believe you’ve done an excellent job executing your theme with this logo. I can easily see your passion for baseball and your critical choices in deciding what elements to include. If I were to have to give a critique, I would have to say that the bottom half to me is pretty flawless. I like that you incorporated “Cougar Baseball” using the techniques we’ve learned from our first Illustrator tutorial and agree that Univers is a very fitting font. I find it classic and simple with enough edge for a sports’ incorporated design. Your design to make the baseball player a silhouette (which I hope I can figure out who it is as soon as baseball season begins this Friday…Go Cougs!) is timeless, and a great way to display that anyone could relate or substitute any player in its place. Although the logo is flat, it creates a neat motion-effect only fitting for this theme. Incorporating the Bryan Tower is smart and really high-lights the difference that WSU sets apart, however, maybe altering its location may help balance this design…potentially behind the baseball player but expands across the entire length of the baseball? Can’t wait to see the finished product!
